Nashville Fashion Week 2013: What to Wear

Nashville Fashion Week is next week!  Now if you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, don’t worry!  There are still tickets available and you can buy week passes or just pick the nights you can make it here.  So, we’ve got tickets, but what to wear?!?!?  We are all scrambling around, just like you, trying to figure out what we will wear to wow photographers and fellow attendees.  Who doesn’t want to be in a Street Fashion blog??  Here are few cute looks and tips to get you through a few nights of fashion week!

Here is a chic look any of us can do: Mix 1 part dark skinny jean with a saucy top and then slather on some sparkling, edgy necklaces and you’ve got yourself a recipe for fab!

fashion week2

Seven (jeans): $5.00, No Label (top): $20.00, Rachel Rachel Roy (shoes): $68.00,

Necklaces: $16.00, $20.00, $28.00

No, you can never go wrong with sequins and sparkles.  Incorporate sequins, leather, and animal print and you’ll be looking even fabber than ever before!

fashion week4

Robert Rodriguez (cardigan): $68.00, BCBG (blouse): $32.00, Muubaa (shorts): $88.00,

Brian Atwood (shoes): $60.00, Necklace: $24.o0

Edge up a knee length dress with some studs and a pop of color on your feet!  And if you must wear a solid dress try to find one with some texture, like this lace one.

fashion week3

Jovani (blazer): $140.00, Abs (dress): $40.00, Miu Miu (shoes): $360.00, Necklace: $24.00

Now if you want to look the fabulest, you must be BOLD!  Pair  graphic prints together with bright colors and you are sure to stand out all night long.

fashion week

BCBG (dress): $125.00, Liberty of London (scarf): $28.00, YSL (shoes): $400.00,

Coldwater Creek (necklace): $24.00

Go have some fun in your closet; I’m sure you have something to wow us with!  And if you need anything you just come by and we’ll fix you up to look like a model hot off the runway!

The Rule of Thirds: How to Dress Proportionately!

We all know the importance of dressing for your shape, but did you know there’s a specific math to it? We’ve been reading up about the Golden Mean of Fashion- it’s all about choosing pieces that break up your outfit into thirds!

We know, fashion and math?! But stay with us, it’s worth it! So why is this important? Dressing in uneven proportions elongates the body and is aesthetically pleasing. Basically you want to avoid cutting your body in half with the pieces you wear, because it makes you look boxy and unflattering.

We’ve put together a few outfits below to show you how you can use the rule of thirds when you get dressed every day:

rule of thirds

Sweater- Moda sz M $40

Blouse- Vintage sz M $32

Knit Pencil Skirt- American Apparel sz S $20

Wooden Bead Necklace- Happiness, $28

Long Necklace- $36

Metallic Heels- Jessica Simpson sz 8 $18

Pair a longer sweater with a pencil skirt for crisp look that puts 2/3 on top, and 1/3 on the bottom. It’s also important to note that the pieces both have the same lines, which helps elongate the body even more.

rule of thirds 2

Purple Dress- Amanda Uprichard sz XS $35

Blazer- H&M sz 4 $20

Belt- The Limited sz S $2.50

Metallic Heels- Jessica Simpson sz 9 $6

In this look we used color to break up the outfit into thirds. Pair a mid length shirt dress, and a long blazer in bright colors for a fun office appropriate look, and belt it to keep it from looking boxy.

rule of thirds 3Wrap Sweater- Krisa sz M $100

Leopard Top- Jones NY sz S $3

Denim Blouse- Eddie Bauer sz S $12

Skirt- Theory sz 2 $66

Necklace- Talbots $24

Perforated Heels- Seven for All Mankind sz 5.5 $51

If you’re a long skirt lover, make sure you’re wearing them with tops that are not too long (For example, you should not pair a long sweater like the one we used in the first outfit with maxi skirt!) . This ensemble puts 1/3 on top and 2/3 on bottom. You can still have fun with layering (you know we do!), just make sure you’re mixing pieces that are the right length for the skirt. And like the look above, the belt on the cardigan sweater cinches in the waist to give your body definition.

Did you know we can help you put together outfits if you come in and shop? If you need help figuring out this whole Golden Mean thing come and see us 🙂

Enjoy your fabulous Thursday!

Put a Hat on It!

It seems lately that many outfits are incomplete without some kind of head wear. Maybe it’s just the blustery weather we’ve been having this week, but millinery is on our minds! Hat shops have even been cropping up in several locations in Nashville with HatWrks on 8th Ave South, Otis James over in Marathon Village, and of course Goorin Bros in downtown. We have an especially fun selection of fun and cozy hats right now that are perfect for shielding those ears from the wind and chill (and for added chic, of course!). Check out the outfits we put together to go with a few of our favorite toppers:

Green Cardigan- Coldwater Creek sz M $28

Purple Dress- sz S $28

Belt- Gap sz S $10

Scarf- $20

Wooden Bead Necklace- $24

Felt Hat- Stetson for Billy Reid $200

Boots- MIA sz 6.5 $30

Go for a boho look with a great felt hat and comfy belted cardigan!

Blouse- 2 B Rych sz 6 $75

Leopard Jacket- Julian Taylor sz 12 (SOLD!)

Cobalt Blue Jeans- Lucky Brand sz 4 $24

Necklace- $28

Glitter Flats- Stuart Weitzman sz 8.5 $120

Fedora- Lola Hats $120

Pair a funky feathered fedora with an animal print jacket and bright pants if you’re feeling bold!

Blouse- Meadow sz 4 $36

Skirt- Lux sz M $24

Necklace- $16

Wool Cloche- $28

Heels- Steve Madden sz 7 $48

Feeling Retro? Update a cloche hat with a sweet scalloped blouse, tweed skirt, and fun cut out heels. Now go and paint the town (And all that jazz?)!

Blazer- Leifsdottir sz 6 $160

Lacy Strapless Dress- Vivienne Tam sz 6 $60

Necklace- Premier Designs $20

Platform Pumps- LAMB sz 7/7.5 $110

Hat- Bollman $24

Dress down a prim lacy dress with a cropped blazer and bowler hat!

How do you wear your favorite fall hat?

The Runway Recycled: Anna Sui’s Unexpected Mixes!

Another great fall collection that are we smitten with is Anna Sui. She always turns out fabulous prints in fun and exciting hues and patterns, but this season we love the way she mixed unexpected colors and textures. We’ve covered mixing prints before, but now we’ll show you how to throw some heavier textures into the mix for fall!

Here’s the looks we were inspired by from the designer’s fall show:

All images from Style.com

Fur Trim Cardigan- WR sz M $28

Blouse- Volcom sz XS $12

Skirt- Anthropologie sz 4 $ 48

Belt- Ellen Tracy sz S $12

Wooden Bead Necklace- $16

Lac up Bootie- Steve Madden sz 9 $68

Mix red and pink together for an unexpected ensemble. We chose a fun fur trimmed candy apple red cardigan and paired it with a raspberry tweed skirt. We added a sheer printed blouse to balance out the two bright pieces. The print works with them because it has a bit of red in it, as well as some gray which acts as a neutral!

Long Cardigan- Soft Surroundings sz S/M $28

Mesh Printed Top- Karen Kane sz S $12

Skirt- Sevier Skirts sz 8 $100

Belt- Bebe sz S $16

Necklace- Express $24

Suede Booties- J Jill sz 7 $68

Mix textures and patterns with pieces that are all from the same or similar color families for an interesting and eye catching ensemble! We paired a mesh top with a metallic printed skirt and comfy cardigan. Add the suede booties and we’ll be surprised if someone doesn’t think you walked right off of the runway 😉

Tweed Jacket- Joan Collins sz 8 $20

Sheer Printed Blouse- Quintessential sz S $28

Striped Skirt- Free People sz 4/6 $32

Silver Necklace- $10

Gold Necklace- Fleur De Lis $24

Oversized Chunky Scarf- Twinkle by Wenlan $68

Booties- BCBGirl sz 9.5 $12

Pair a striped skirt with a floral blouse and a textured jacket for an easy, chic look. Want to channel Anna Sui’s show even more? Just add some bright coral tights to the mix!

Now get to mixing and matching!

Not quite sure how to make a piece work? Bring it in and we’ll help you put something together Anna Sui-style!
