What is a lobby boy? A lobby boy is completely invisible, yet always in sight. A lobby boy remembers what people hate. A lobby boy anticipates the client’s needs before the needs are needed. A lobby boy is, above all, discreet to a fault. Our guests know that their deepest secrets, some of which are frankly rather unseemly, will go with us to our graves. So keep your mouth shut, Zero.
– M. Gustave, The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
In celebration of the Grand Budapest Hotel’s four Academy Award wins this past Sunday (of a whopping nine nominations!), we’ve decided to compile a list of Wes Anderson-inspired looks. From Rushmore to Moonrise Kingdom, Anderson’s work bursts with such charmingly kitschy personality that, while it cannot be replicated, can certainly inspire.
1. Rushmore (1998)
Max Fischer may be a bit lacking in manners and a bit cocky in all other regards, but it’s hard not to be charmed by the boy in the little red beret. In honor of Max’s academic career, we thought the chess-piece skirt was a nice way to pay homage to his extracurriculars.
Top – Brooks Brothers, Size 6, $20
Blazer – Size S, $24
Skirt – Size XS, $12
Shoes – Dr. Marten, Size 8.5, $32
2. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Or, more specifically, Chas Tenenbaum
Though this particular film is limitless in fashion inspiration (Margot’s fur coat/polo dress and sharp bob, Eli Cash’s classic cowboy get-up, and Richie’s infamous sweatband), we chose Chas. Though Lulu Lemon, Athletic, Adidas, Nike, and countless others are staples in many people’s wardrobes these days, Chas was perhaps the first I ever saw to sport athletic wear for fashion rather than function.
Dress – American Twist, Size M,
Jacket – For Love & Liberty, Size M, $56
Shoes – Lacoste, Size 9, $32
3. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
Between the Belefonte crew’s aquatic blues and royal reds, it’s hard not to crave a bit of nautical nourishment in your wardrobe.
Top – Madewell, Size XS,
Cardigan – Comfy USA, Size S,
Skirt – Devlin, Size S,
Shoes – J. Renee, Size 7.5, $24
4. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
From her shift dress/knee sock combo to her fashion-foward luggage, Suzy Bishop has become a style icon, fueling my love for ’60s eyeshadow as well as the majority of 2012’s Halloween costumes. With just a fun-colored dress and a blouse for layering, you too can capture her look
Top – Vivienne Westwood, Size S, $48
Dress – ASOS, Size 8, $36
Purse – Gal, $16
Shoes – Dolls, Size 7,
and last but not least…
5. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Though the entire film is an aesthetic wonderland (no doubt the reason it received Oscars in Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup/Hair), we were in particular drawn to the soft pinks and blues of delicious Mendl’s pastries.
Top – J. Crew, Size S, $16
Dress – Calvin Klein, Size 8, $32
Necklace – Anthropologie, $32
Shoes – Leg Avenue, Size 9, $32
Just as Anderson jumbles together colorful, flavorful, sensory ingredients to create his cinematic masterpieces, come on by and pick up some color for you wardrobe.
